A Book of Shadows is a practitioner's personal working journal, where they record their rituals, observations, and formulas. The name itself became established in the 20th century within the Wiccan tradition. It was introduced by Gerald Gardner, the founder of Wicca, in the late 1940s and 1950s, as the name for a personal journal of the rituals and spells of his tradition. According to Doreen Valiente, who worked alongside him, Gardner borrowed the phrase itself from the occult magazine The Occult Observer, published in 1949.
