Runes are the sign system of the Germanic peoples of Northern Europe, one that served for writing and for divination at the same time. Its earliest form, the Elder Futhark, has twenty-four characters and was in use roughly from 150 to 800 AD: it carved memorial inscriptions on stone, weapons and everyday objects, and later it was consulted for foretelling. A single rune could stand for a sound, for a whole concept, and for an image that a question was put to.

The Elder Futhark grew out of one of the Old Italic alphabets — Germanic tribes took writing on through their contact with the Mediterranean and adapted it to their own sounds and materials. The rune divination systems familiar today, including the work with reversed meanings, took shape much later, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the most influential of them was proposed by Guido von List in the early twentieth century. What a rune set contains

A basic rune set is the twenty-four characters of the Elder Futhark, one rune to each separate stone or wooden tile. Stone and wood are no accident here: a cold pebble or a slice of oak or ash holds a mark differently than paper does, and each feels different in the hand. The carving or painting repeats the same shape that was cut into wood and bone a millennium and a half ago, so a set of twenty-four runes gives you the full working alphabet in one piece.

A pouch almost always comes with the runes — linen, velvet or suede. It serves both for storage and for the work itself: the runes are drawn from the pouch blind, without looking, so that the choice of a sign does not depend on the hand. A good rune set already includes such a pouch, and there is no need to buy one separately.

Sometimes a set includes a twenty-fifth blank rune, known as Odin's rune. It was not part of the historical Futhark — it is a later addition that appeared in the twentieth century along with the new schools of divination. Whether to keep it in the work or set it aside is up to the practitioner, and it changes nothing about the completeness of the base set of twenty-four characters.

How practice with runes begins

The easiest way into practice is one rune a day. In the morning you draw a single character from the pouch, read its meaning, and through the day you notice where it echoes — in a conversation, in a decision, in a mood. Such a draw predicts nothing rigidly; it tunes your attention and gradually ties the dry meaning of a rune to lived experience. The next step is a three-rune spread for past, present and future. The three characters lie left to right. The first speaks of what has already formed and led to the question, the second describes the present situation, the third points to where things are heading. This spread is enough for most everyday questions, and even those long in practice keep coming back to it.

At the start a companion book or booklet of meanings is kept beside the set. It gathers the upright and reversed readings of all twenty-four runes, and glancing into it during the first months is fine. There is no need to memorise the whole Futhark before your first spread: the meanings settle into memory on their own as you draw a sign again and again and check it against the description. After a while the book is needed less and less, and the runes begin to read freely, without a prompt.

Does a rune set need to be activated after purchase?

There is no obligatory activation ritual. A new set passes through several hands during manufacture and delivery — carving, packaging, transport. Many practitioners cleanse the runes before the first spread: they pass them through smoke, leave them in moonlight, sift them through salt, or simply hold them with a clear intention. This is a personal choice, not a condition without which the runes «will not work». You can start laying them out at once, or you can do a brief cleansing, and both are perfectly normal.

Which is the better set to choose — stone or wood?

There is no strict rule here; the difference is in the feel. Stone runes are heavier and cooler in the palm, hold their coolness longer and suit slow, considered work. Wooden ones are lighter and warmer, pleasant to handle and to carry along. Choose by what answers better in your hand — both are equally fit for spreads.

Is a rune set suitable for a beginner with no experience?

Yes, and it is better to start with the standard set of twenty-four runes of the Elder Futhark. This is the full working alphabet that almost every guide and interpretation is written for, so a beginner will always have something to check against. Do not worry that you do not know the meanings by heart: in the first weeks people look them up in the book, and that is a normal part of learning. One sign a day and a three-rune spread are mastered faster than it seems at the start.

Can a rune set be returned?

Yes. A return is handled under Ukraine's consumer protection law, with no additional conditions on our side.
