If you've ever lit incense at home, you know how quickly the smoke changes the space. Within a few minutes the scent spreads through the whole room, and with it comes the sense that something different is beginning: a ritual, or a quiet evening after a hectic day.

Natural incense comes in more than one format: bamboo-core sticks, coreless sticks, cones, solid palo santo blocks, and backflow cones with a waterfall effect. Each format has its own burn rate, smoke direction, and way of using it. Below we compare all five so you can decide which one to try first, then open the page for a specific format to explore it in more depth.

From smoke to tradition: what incense is and where it came from

Incense works on a single principle: smoke that fills the space evenly and predictably. Essential oil acts in one spot, while a smoldering stick or cone releases fragrance into the air layer by layer, and within a few minutes the scent fills the whole room. Incense for rituals and spiritual practices works where a hand holding a bottle of oil can't reach: the smoke gets there on its own.

The tradition of smoke fumigation goes back to deep antiquity. In Egypt incense was burned during temple rites and offerings to the gods, while in India resins and herbs were used to purify a space before meditation. Buddhist monasteries adopted the practice and made incense burning part of the daily routine. Laypeople who came to the temple eventually began doing the same.

The format changed along with the materials. Some cultures wrapped the aromatic mass around a bamboo stick, others pressed it into a cone, or burned the natural material untouched. Today all these options are available at once. One format gives long, even smoke, while another gives a short but intense wave of fragrance.

How incense formats differ from one another

Before choosing a specific format, look at them side by side. Each one has its own burning character and its own audience.

Format

How it burns

Who it suits

Bamboo-core sticks

Smolder evenly and for a long time, the smoke rises in a thin thread

For daily practice and beginners who value a predictable result

Coreless sticks

Burn a bit faster, the smoke is denser, with no woody note in the scent

For those who want a pure fragrance without the taste of smoldering wood

Cones

Burn out quickly, giving a short but intense wave of smoke

For a one-off ritual or quickly fumigating a small room

Palo santo

Solid wood, burns unevenly, needs occasional blowing to keep it going

For targeted rites and those who value naturalness without additives

Backflow incense

The smoke doesn't rise but flows downward, creating a waterfall effect

For meditative practice, where the visual effect matters as much as the scent

Each format is lit and extinguished in its own way. A stick is best set in a holder at an angle of about 45 degrees, with the smoldering tip pointing outward so the ash falls to the side rather than onto the table. A cone is placed on a non-flammable surface or in a metal bowl with sand: it burns all the way through and stays hot until the end. Palo santo isn't usually left to burn all the way down: hold it over a flame for a few seconds, let it catch, blow out the flame, and the wood will keep smoldering on its own for another couple of minutes, filling the room with smoke.

If you're worried about filling the apartment with smoke, start with a bamboo-core stick or a cone. Both formats burn predictably, and the smoke from them doesn't spread as heavily as from backflow or coreless options. Crack a window open while burning, and 15–20 minutes after the format has burned out, no trace of heavy smoke will remain, while the scent will linger a little longer. It's best to try it for the first time in a ventilated room, and only then decide whether you want a more intense format, such as backflow.

Frequently asked questions about incense

First-time buyers of incense almost always have the same set of doubts: will it make the whole apartment smell, which format is easiest to start with, and is it safe to burn something at home without a fireplace or a range hood. If you ventilate the room and set the stick or cone in a holder correctly, the smoke clears quickly and the fire stays under control the whole time it's burning.

How to avoid filling your apartment with smoke

Crack open a window or the door to an adjoining room while burning, and keep the format away from curtains and soft furniture, which quickly absorb odors. Sticks and cones produce a controllable amount of smoke, while backflow incense creates a more noticeable visual effect, even though it doesn't produce more smoke. 15–20 minutes after the format has burned out, the room airs out completely.

Which format to choose for the first time

For a beginner, the easiest place to start is a bamboo-core stick: it burns for a long time, evenly, and doesn't need constant attention. A cone works well if you need a quick, intense result, for example before a one-off ritual. Palo santo and backflow formats are best tried once you already have experience with simpler options.

Is it safe to burn incense at home

Yes, as long as you follow simple rules for handling open flame. Place the smoldering format on a non-flammable holder, keep it away from paper, fabric, and the edge of a table, and never leave it unattended near children or pets. After burning, make sure the ash has cooled completely before throwing it away.

How long does incense keep, and how should it be stored

Incense keeps for a long time if stored in a dry place away from direct sunlight and outside odors, which resin and herbs absorb easily. A tightly sealed package or a paper bag works better than an open vase on a shelf. With proper storage, the scent doesn't lose its intensity for years.

Do you ship abroad, and can I pay on delivery

Yes. We ship across Ukraine and abroad via Nova Poshta and Ukrposhta, by courier within Kyiv and the suburbs. You can pay cash on delivery (150 UAH prepayment), by card online in advance, or in cash if you pick up the order at the showroom.
