A herbal candle is a candle in which dried herbs physically stay visible in the depth of the wax, rather than dissolving into it without a trace. You can make out a lavender flower, a rosemary leaf, or a calendula petal right up until the candle burns all the way down.
In a scented glass candle, the fragrance comes from essential oil dissolved into the wax in advance. There is no visible petal or leaf there — the whole effect relies on the scent that spreads through the room when heated. Herb in the depth of the wax
Dried herbs get into a candle in one of two ways. With melting-in, the dried flowers are stirred into liquid wax before it's poured into the mold — then the flower or leaf ends up somewhere inside the whole depth of the candle, and you can only find it by cutting away the layer of wax on top. With pressing-in, a freshly cast candle is surrounded with dried flowers on the outside while the top layer of wax is still warm and soft, and the petals are pressed into the surface with fingers.
In a candle with essential oil, the scent weakens as the wax burns down from top to bottom, but the candle itself doesn't change in appearance — the color and surface stay the same from lighting to the last centimeter. In a herbal candle, the herb visibly changes the look of the wax: dry petals show through a thin layer or lie as a noticeable relief on the surface, and the charred spots where the herb has burned become part of what you observe during the ritual.
While the candle burns, you can watch that same petal or leaf melted in for your goal: the wax around it slowly melts and darkens, and the herb itself blackens and crumbles along with it. By the time the candle burns all the way down, the plant part chosen for that same request has burned away too.

A herbal candle raises questions that don't come up with an ordinary colored candle without herbs: whether it's safe to burn a candle with dried herbs, whether you can put together your own blend, and how the format differs from other plant-based candles. Won't the herb catch fire from the candle's open flame
No. With correct pouring or pressing, the herb stays embedded in the wax and doesn't touch the wick — the melting wax puts out any contact between the herb and the open flame before it can catch. The danger only appears with a low-quality candle, where a petal accidentally ended up too close to the wick or sticks out of the wax. Such a candle is checked before sale — at the slightest doubt, the wick is trimmed or the candle is pulled from sale.
Can you put together your own herb blend
Yes, if you discuss the combination of herbs with a practitioner before ordering. Name your intention and the herbs you'd like to see in the candle — lavender, rosemary, calendula, rose petals, or a combination of them — and you'll get an answer on how well the chosen blend suits your task and in what proportions it's best made. A ready individual blend is put into the candle at the next casting, so such an order takes a little more time than ordering an already-ready candle from the catalog.
How is a herbal candle different from a beeswax candle with additives
With us, beeswax is pure beeswax, with no herbs added. All the color and scent of that candle comes from the wax itself. A herbal candle is built differently: you can see the actual dried herb in it, darkening and changing the look of the wax as it burns. If you'd like to combine both formats, ask a practitioner — beeswax and herbal candles can be used in one ritual, one after another, as two separate tools.
