The Symbolon Oracle was created in Germany in the 1980s by Peter Orban, Ingrid Zinnel, and Thea Weller. The deck shares only one similarity with Tarot—the number of cards (78). The purpose of Symbolon is to reconstruct memories and reawaken moments from past lives.
Working with these cards is like a psychotherapeutic session, where the “patient” becomes aware of a problem, returns to its origins, and understands how to resolve it. The imagery on the cards represents European myths and history, guiding human consciousness back into the past. Each card also includes an astrological symbol in the corner, allowing the deck to be used alongside astrological knowledge, though prior expertise is not required.
The goal in both approaches is the same: to remember, to rediscover the “symbolon” from the past, and to reunite what was once separated.
The name comes from the Greek word symbolon. In ancient Greece, this referred to broken clay tokens carried by travelers—one half kept by one person, the other by someone important to them. Even after long journeys and years apart, the matching halves could reunite and confirm identity.
