This edition, distinguished by its soft, muted color tones, will become an essential addition to any Tarot collection. The bright primary colors found in the standard Rider-Waite Tarot deck from 1909, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., have been restored to their original palette characteristic of the early 20th-century Arts and Crafts style. For example, the pale blue backgrounds of the “Star” and “Wheel of Fortune” cards here are rendered in a mint-green shade. Tarot enthusiasts will be pleased to see that the card backs have been returned to their original Tudor rose and lily design in pale blue.
The original Rider-Waite Tarot Pack includes a guide to the “Celtic Cross” spread and an updated version of The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, written by Arthur Edward Waite. This new edition also features a thoughtful foreword by Liz Greene, who not only places the Tarot in its historical context but also considers it within a broader perspective. She describes Tarot as “a series of pictorial images of the archetypal human life journey.”
