Aromatic Resins for Magic Practices

Sort:
View:

Resin is obtained from the hardened sap of a tree: frankincense, myrrh, copal. Powder is made from the same plant raw material, ground into coarse dust. Neither resin nor powder smolders on its own, unlike a stick or cone, which catch fire from a match and smolder to the end without outside help. Fire must be brought to the resin and powder and held separately, on a burning-hot coal.

It's a matter of combustion physics. A stick and a cone have a binding agent: it turns the mixture into a thin rod or cone capable of smoldering from edge to edge. Resin and powder remain pure raw material without a binder. It melts and evaporates only from intense heat, which a match or lighter cannot provide. Hence the simple rule: without a charcoal tablet, these formats won't open up.

Resin and powder burn differently than a stick or cone

Natural resin is collected by hand from tree bark and cleaned of debris: it is the hardened resin of frankincense, myrrh, copal, and similar trees. Frankincense gives a warm, resinous aroma with a light citrus note. Myrrh smells dense, slightly bitter and earthy. Copal is light, resinous-sweet, almost coniferous. Each resin has a dense, multifaceted scent that unfolds in layers: first a sharp note of smoke, then the resin warms up and releases its main aroma, and at the end a soft trail remains.

Powder for fumigation refers to ground plant raw material: bark, roots, leaves, resins, or their blends, brought to a state of coarse dust. It burns faster than resin because the particles are smaller and the heat reaches them faster and more evenly. The aroma unfolds sharper and shorter, which is why powder suits quickly fumigating a room before a ritual or a gathering, when there is no time to wait for a long warm-up.

A stick and a cone sustain their own smoldering thanks to the binding agent inside the mixture. Resin and powder have no binder, so they lack the heat of their own to sustain burning. Place a piece of frankincense on a table and light it with a lighter. It will melt, char, and go out without releasing an aroma. Only the even heat of a smoldering coal can open up resin, warming it from below and holding the needed temperature.

How to light charcoal for resin and powder

Lighting charcoal scares beginners more than the fumigation process itself. In practice, the whole ritual takes a few minutes and requires no skill. Let the coal heat up to a gray coating before placing the resin on it: then the aroma will unfold gradually and evenly.

  1. Take a charcoal tablet for censers and grip it with tongs or a metal tweezer.

  2. Bring the flame of a lighter or match to the edge of the tablet and hold it until sparks run across the whole surface.

  3. Place the tablet on a heatproof stand or in a burner with sand and wait 2-3 minutes until the coal is covered with an even gray coating.

  4. Check the heat: hold your palm at a safe distance. The coal should give off steady warmth, without sudden flares.

  5. Place a pea-sized piece of resin or a pinch of powder on the burning-hot coal.

  6. Add the next portion once the previous one has burned down and the aroma has faded.

Choosing resin for the task and rules of safe fumigation

A burner and coal get very hot, so the stand under them must be heatproof. A metal censer, a stone bowl with sand, or a special stand on legs will work. They hold the heat and protect the table surface. The room should be aired out beforehand, and while the resin is burning, a window or door should be left slightly open. Smoke from resin is denser than from a stick and, without ventilation, quickly fills the room.

At Artifacts of the Vedun, resin and powder selection is handled by those who work with resins in their own practice. For clearing a space, white copal or palo santo resin will work. For concentration before meditation, frankincense is useful. For working with ancestors and deep practices, myrrh or complex resin blends are used. A consultation before ordering removes the main beginner risk: buying a resin that doesn't suit the task and being disappointed with the format.

Questions about resins and powders for fumigation

Resins and powders raise the same questions for beginners: about how long the coal burns, the right stand, and delivery. We've collected the answers below.

How long does one ember burn

A medium-sized charcoal tablet, about 33 mm in diameter, burns for 40-60 minutes depending on ventilation and how densely it's covered with ash. During this time, you can warm 3-4 pea-sized portions of resin, if you add them as the previous one burns down.

What kind of stand or burner is needed

A metal censer with air holes, a stone bowl with a layer of sand, or a special burner on legs will work. The main requirement: the material must withstand the temperature of smoldering coal and not transfer heat to the table or shelf beneath it.

Can resin be lit without coal

No. Resin and powder without a binding agent cannot sustain their own smoldering, and the open flame of a lighter will only melt and char the piece without releasing the aroma. Only the even heat of coals heated to a gray coating can open up resin.

Do you ship resins abroad, and can I pay on delivery

Yes. We ship across Ukraine and abroad via Nova Poshta and Ukrposhta, by courier within Kyiv and the suburbs. You can pay cash on delivery (150 UAH prepayment), by card online in advance, or in cash at the showroom.
