The imagery of this Tarot deck is inspired by the art of Gustav Klimt, one of the most prominent representatives of Symbolism. Rather than depicting literal characters, Klimt’s work conveys deeper images and concepts—music, life, dreams, and love.
This extraordinary Austrian artist, active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, became renowned for the elegance, sensuality, and richness of his paintings and decorative works. He moved away from academic traditions and moralizing themes of earlier generations, challenging established norms and transforming art into a dreamlike expression filled with opulence and decadence. His symbolic and emotionally charged style makes his work especially suitable for reinterpretation within Tarot imagery.
The artistic vision of Klimt was shaped by a variety of influences, including medieval engravings, Japanese art, as well as Egyptian, Byzantine, Ancient Greek, and Minoan cultures. His figures are often depicted as tall, elegant, and pale, set within richly ornamented compositions.
Based on Klimt’s works created between 1899 and 1917, A. A. Atanassov developed a stylized Tarot deck known as Golden Klimt Tarot. Some cards closely resemble the original paintings—for example, the Moon card echoes “Danaë,” the Ten of Cups reflects “Jungfrau,” and Strength is inspired by “Judith II.”
Each card is intricately designed, with gold tones and mosaic-like details enhancing the dramatic visual effect. Clothing and backgrounds are transformed into flowing patterns, vibrant colors, and shimmering metallic elements. The Major Arcana more directly reference Klimt’s works, while the Minor Arcana are illustrated in a complementary artistic style.
Among the most striking cards are The Sun, The Lovers, and The Chariot. The Sun, for instance, depicts an embracing couple bathed in golden light, inspired by Klimt’s famous painting “The Kiss.”
The Golden Klimt Tarot is a celebration of human beauty, contrasted with luxurious garments and richly detailed settings. It stands as one of the finest decks for art lovers and collectors alike.
