The Italian master illustrator Roberto De Angelis was inspired by the iconography described in the works of A. E. Waite, recreating the same symbolic immediacy of Pamela Colman Smith’s Tarot in a modern style.
Much of what has been written about the Waite Tarot can also be applied to the Universal Tarot. However, there are some significant differences. De Angelis’s softer and more dynamic style reflects certain symbolic syntheses and the restraint of pre-Raphaelite illustrations. At the same time, the more modern and realistic aspect is more aligned with our era and resonates more with contemporary ways of thinking.
In fact, knowing the meaning of a card alone is not enough to read Tarot. We must attune ourselves to the image, allow it to speak to our intuition, and let it guide and support us during readings. This understanding was the foundation of Waite’s decision to also create allegorical images for the Minor Arcana, in order to provide a visual key for interpretation.
