The altar board "Mara" is dedicated to the Slavic Goddess Marena (Morena) — the patroness of the night realm, dreams, death and rebirth, the cycles of nature, and deep inner transformation. Her image is associated with winter darkness, the transition between worlds, as well as feminine mysticism, sleep, and the change of states of being.
Made of natural wood, often in a dark or ash shade, with an engraved or hand-applied symbol of Mara: a lace of death, a star flower, a serpent, a river, or a female figure within a circle of the Moon. It may contain elements created through burning, carving, or pyrography.
