The Chariot — the embodiment of forward movement, determination, ambition, overcoming inner contradictions, and, most importantly, victory. In readings, the card emphasizes that simply waiting is not enough; it is worth taking control of the situation and taking action.
The Major Arcana follows the Lovers and literally means: the choice has been made, and now it is time to follow it. The Chariot has the numerical value of 7 — spiritual completeness, transition to a new level, deep inner balance, and perfection.
Ruling Planet: Moon.
Element: Water.
Zodiac Sign: Cancer.
Alchemical Meaning: Striving for Victory.
The archetype of the Chariot corresponds to a strong and determined person: someone who knows what they are fighting for; someone who overcomes obstacles and achieves the desired result; someone who takes responsibility for their own life and leaves everything unnecessary behind. In its shadow manifestation, however, it represents a person who moves through life aggressively, without a goal and in haste, wishing to win at any cost while not even knowing what or whom they are fighting against.
Symbolism and Imagery of the Card
On the card, we immediately see a male figure — a warrior. He looks young and focused. His appearance and upright posture embody willpower, awareness, and a person's ability to control their own life. His copper armor, decorated with crescent moons and numerous alchemical symbols, is impossible to overlook. These emphasize his readiness to move forward and maintain self-control when difficulties arise. A square is placed on his chest, serving as a symbol of focused power.
The man wears a crown on his head, identifying him as a literal victor who has attained spiritual maturity. At the center of the crown is a star, which represents a connection with Higher Powers, Divine protection, and cosmic order. From this, we can conclude that the warrior controls the situation through the power of reason, will, and Higher Law, rather than blindly surrendering to his instincts.
Above the warrior's figure, on the chariot, there is a starry canopy. It represents a spiritual guide followed by the physical body. The front of the chariot is decorated with a shield and a winged symbol, which together are interpreted as the union of two principles — masculine and feminine.
In front of the chariot are black and white sphinxes, which are among the most important symbols of the Arcana. It is worth noting that they have an equal distribution of light and dark colors. This demonstrates opposing forces: logic and emotion, fear and courage, desire and duty. The charioteer's main task is not to choose or tame one of these sides, but to learn to direct their “own sphinxes” in the same direction.
The Arcana speaks of victory through the integration of opposites, rather than through suppressing a part of oneself (this is clearly emphasized by the absence of reins).
Behind all the figures, a city can be seen — the city that the charioteer has left behind in order to move into the unknown. A river is also visible, symbolizing the deep feelings and emotions that encourage him not to stop. There is no way back.
What Does the Chariot Mean in the Upright Position?
The path is one of its key meanings. In readings, the Chariot may indicate physical movement: relocation, a business trip, or travel.
The upright position also indicates that victory is the result of effort. It is worth taking initiative and defending your interests, moving forward despite all contradictions, and remaining disciplined and confident in what you are doing.
Among the Major Arcana, this card has a unique interpretation. Before reaching the Chariot, a person began moving in search of new meanings (through the Fool), discovered their own power (through the Magician), learned to listen to their inner voice (through the High Priestess), discovered creative power (through the Empress), became confident in their actions (through the Emperor), comprehended the power of knowledge and faith (through the Hierophant), and made a conscious choice (through the Lovers).
The time has come for the first major test. Will you be able to control the power you have already gained?
What Does the Chariot Mean in the Reversed Position?
The reversed Chariot indicates a loss of control or a loss of one's true direction. On the way toward achieving the desired goal, actions have been chaotic and indecisive, while excessive control and aggression have exhausted you. It may seem as though everything was done correctly, yet it did not work out as desired. Stagnation and delays in movement have shaken your psychological balance.
The struggle for victory has turned into a struggle with yourself. The Arcana advises you to stop and consider whether the means you have chosen truly justify the goal. Or perhaps both the goal and the means of achieving it were chosen incorrectly from the very beginning?
Interpretation of the Chariot in Love
Meaning in the Upright Position
The Chariot speaks of development and movement. It demonstrates active rapprochement, a feeling of strong attraction, the desire to fight for a relationship, and the need to take initiative in order to move to a new level.
The Arcana advises single people not to wait until the ideal partner appears, but to meet people themselves, start conversations, and ask someone out on a date. Sometimes it is worth taking one step toward someone in order to become happy.
Meaning in the Reversed Position
In a love reading, the card means that the partners are moving, but unfortunately, in different directions. They are unable to determine a shared direction in life, which leads to constant emotional struggle and conflict within the relationship.
If a person is single, the reversed Chariot says: love is not a competition. There is no need to look for a partner if you are not interested in a relationship at this stage of your life.
Interpretation in the Area of Health
Meaning in the Upright Position
The Arcana advises you to actively address matters concerning your health: your body is capable of more than you think. The Chariot supports discipline, physical activity, and the development of endurance.
The card may also indicate that recovery or rehabilitation requires inner determination and seeking help from specialists. Do not ignore symptoms or unusual conditions in your body.
Meaning in the Reversed Position
Your body is overloaded and exhausted due to excessive physical training and a chaotic lifestyle. Your body needs rest and peace.
The reversed Arcana often represents athletes who participate in competitions despite serious injuries; employees who skip lunch and dinner in order to develop a plan; and people who want to lose weight quickly and exhaust themselves with excessive workouts.
It is important to note: Tarot cards do not establish medical diagnoses and cannot replace a full consultation with a doctor!
