Choosing your first or a new tarot deck is a special moment that should be approached consciously and thoughtfully, because it is not simply a set of images, but a true magical tool that should become your assistant!

Many people recommend starting with the Waite-Smith (Rider-Waite) deck. Yes, it is informative, thoroughly described, and has plenty of available guides and even educational books. However, let’s take a closer look at what exactly you should pay attention to when choosing a deck, and why you should not always choose the one that almost everyone recommends.

The most important criterion when choosing a deck is your inner response. Look through the available decks (by the way, there are many of them in our store) and try to feel which one attracts you the most. Intuition will be your best guide in this matter. The most popular or most expensive deck may not necessarily be the right one for you, because a connection with a tool arises on the level of personal perception.
Be sure to pay attention to the illustrations, because you will have to look at them hundreds, perhaps even thousands of times. If the images cause discomfort or unpleasant feelings (for example, irritation, disgust, or complete indifference), immediately move on to another deck. You can also ask yourself during this process: “Do I like these illustrations?”, “Do I want to look at the cards presented and, most importantly, work with them?”

The question of choosing between a classic and an author’s deck often arises. We recommend choosing a classic deck for those who are just beginning to explore tarot, want to thoroughly study the traditional system, and explore its archetypes. Author’s decks, on the other hand, are suitable for those who seek to deepen their spiritual experience, discover new meanings, and explore other traditions by establishing an energetic and intuitive connection with them.

Please note that there is no “right” or “wrong” deck for a beginner practitioner or an experienced practitioner. Choose the deck that resonates with you the most!

Consider the theme of the deck. There are currently hundreds of varieties of tarot: Lenormand, witch tarot, angel tarot, mythological, erotic, lunar, cat tarot, and many others. Sometimes it is the theme of the deck that helps you feel a deep connection and a need to work with it.

A less obvious criterion that most people overlook: the size of the cards. You may think it is a minor detail, but your comfort while working with the deck depends on it. Consider whether the cards will be comfortable to hold in your hands, whether they are too large or too small, whether they are easy to shuffle, and whether you like their quality. Remember that a deck should be pleasant both to the eyes and to the hands.

We sincerely hope that our advice will help you choose the best deck for your magical practice!
