In magical practice, the term “candle twist” is often used, especially in rituals for attracting love, success, and prosperity, or conversely, for severing connections, removing negativity, and cleansing.
A candle twist is understood as a way of enhancing the energetic action of candles through their number and the direction in which they are twisted.
Candle twists are divided into two types: left-handed twists — twisted AWAY from oneself (for cleansing negativity, removing curses, evil eye influences, and everything connected with releasing or letting go); and right-handed twists — twisted TOWARD oneself (for attraction and drawing things in).
Essential oils and herbs are also often added to candle twists depending on the intention. The color of the candle carries its own function as well, and you can read more about that on our website.
What Does the Number of Candles in a Twist Mean?
2 candles — symbolize connection and interaction. They may be used for harmonizing relationships, reconciliation, or agreements between you and another person. They can also help resolve internal contradictions (such as “I want to, but I’m afraid”), balance different areas of life (work and family), or support rituals where past and future intersect. In cleansing work, such a twist may reveal dependencies and assist in “cutting them away.”
3 candles — three is the number of the life path (beginning → process → result). This twist carries special symbolism, as it can establish balance between body-soul-spirit, past-present-future, and desire-intention-manifestation. This type of twist is considered universal because it is used for cleansing, restoration, opening pathways, and work related to fate.
4 candles — represent the four cardinal directions and the four classical elements. A twist with this number is well suited for grounding and long-term work (on oneself, one’s lineage, or another intention). If you seek cleansing from ancestral or social attachments and relief from energetic burdens, a four-candle twist is often chosen.
5 candles — symbolize active action, the magic of willpower, and strong influence. Such a twist may radically transform a situation, create a breakthrough, and help overcome stagnation. It is often used in rituals aimed at releasing old patterns and limiting programs that prevent progress.
6 candles — not recommended for beginners. As the number of candles increases, so does responsibility. Six or more candles may represent not merely a ritual, but a direct invocation of greater Forces.
If you are an experienced practitioner, read on: a six-candle twist is associated with multi-layered work involving large processes such as ancestral patterns, energetic fields, personal development, or business success.
7 candles — are believed to cleanse almost to the “root,” helping release the past, energetic knots, repetitive life patterns, and various egregores (such as those associated with poverty, illness, loneliness, and similar conditions).
8 candles — are used for restoring energetic resources, strengthening protection, reclaiming lost energy, and reconnecting with personal power believed to belong to you by birthright.
How to Twist Candles Safely?
Do so in complete silence and in a balanced state of mind. Before beginning, it is recommended to cleanse yourself and your workspace, as well as perform a grounding meditation. Your hands should be warm, as they are considered conductors of your energy. Choose one twisting direction and maintain it throughout the process. Do not create a candle twist while emotionally overwhelmed, exhausted, angry, fearful of the outcome, or simply because you want results “faster.”
Remember a Few Key Rules:
If there is no inner balance, the energy may become distorted and potentially cause harm.
As the number of candles increases, so does the perceived strength of their magical action. The tightness of the twist also matters (the tighter, the better), but remember to warm the candles slightly beforehand so they do not crack.
While twisting, monitor the integrity of the candles and do not use any that crack or break during preparation.
Six or more candles are believed to work not only with an individual but also with their social environment, ancestral line, and life cycle.
And most importantly — true magic is not created by the number of candles, but by who you are when you light them.
